Visa-free entry
About 60 non-EU nationalities — including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea — can enter the Netherlands (and the wider Schengen Area) visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, for tourism or business. Check current eligibility via the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
Not available. Nationalities not on the visa-exempt list must obtain a Schengen short-stay visa from a Dutch consulate before travel (around €80 for adults).
Health & vaccines
No vaccines are legally required to enter the Netherlands. Routine vaccines (MMR, tetanus, diphtheria-polio) being up to date is the standard NaTHNaC recommendation.
Not required. The Netherlands is not a yellow-fever risk country and does not require a certificate from travelers arriving from at-risk countries.
Customs
200 cigarettes (or equivalent) duty-free. 4 litres still wine + 16 litres beer, plus either 1 litre spirits or 2 litres fortified/sparkling wine. €430 of other goods (€150 for under-15s) before import duty applies. Declare cash of €10,000 or more.

⚠️ ETIAS has NOT launched as of July 2026 — the EU dropped its previous 2026 target date and a 2027 launch now looks likely. Nothing needs to be applied for today. Separately, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) — biometric fingerprint/facial-image registration replacing passport stamps — became fully operational on 10 April 2026, so expect a somewhat different (and occasionally slower) process at Schiphol passport control. Always verify with IND before booking.

Arriving at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS)
SIM & connectivity
KPN, Vodafone, and Odido all have counters in Schiphol Plaza arrivals. Tourist SIMs run roughly €10–€35 depending on data — prices are noticeably cheaper if you wait and buy in central Amsterdam instead.
Euro (EUR). ATMs widely available. Contactless/Apple Pay accepted almost everywhere — some smaller shops are card/phone-only and don't take cash at all.
Getting into town
Direct NS trains run from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal every few minutes, taking about 17 minutes for a €6.20–€7.10 second-class single (buy at machines or tap in/out with contactless — no paper ticket needed). Metered taxis are also available outside arrivals for those with heavy luggage or arriving very late.
